I have really enjoyed these. We have a few candle nuts in our family. I think a set of these for Christmas depicting the holidays of the year would be a great gift for them. The fact that the size is so flexible means it could be used around most candle holder. Thanks!

Great question! I have seen some that the vellum goes above the side of the glass votive. I did not make mine like that though, because I am also in fear of fire! So in my case 2 5/8 inches brings the vellum just UP TO THE EDGE of the glass, but not over at all. You just adjust the height based on the size of the votive holders that you get at your store.
For the candle I will always use a little tea light for a couple reasons. For one thing, the wax stays in the little metal circle of the tea light, so no hot wax gets in the votive holder near the glass at all, so it is not very hot at all. There is no flame at the top of the votive as with a regular candle. I know lots of people who have made them with regular votive candles and have never had a problem, but I am chicken!
The real reason I like tea lights is that they make the votive GLOW MUCH BETTER! With the light down in the bottom of the cup, your whole design is illuminated right from the beginning - you don't have to wait for the candle to burn down for it to look good. The cardstock strip at the bottom covers the tea light itself, so you do not see the metal in there.
Also - they are a lot cheaper if you are doing it for a lot of customers to make. If you give it as a gift, like one votive and 6 covers, then I would also give 6 votives (at least) to put in it because they do not obviously burn as long as a regular candle.

It is wonderful --- I made one for myself and I love it --- I'm sitting here laughing because I thought the purpose of the cardstock piece at the bottom was just to make it sturdier, didn't think it was for hiding the metal of the tealight inside. LOL --- I also use tealights because the flame doesn't get higher and as you said the wax stays in the little container. Thanks for sharing.
